Anna Suschitzky’s tits are the stars of this intriguing and engaging performance piece, real personal experience mediated into a public show and debate. All About My Tits is an exploration of one woman’s relationship with her breasts from puberty through to motherhood from young girl to young woman and in particular the challenges of breastfeeding. Suschitzky reflects that once pregnant “I gave up Bravissimo and embraced Mothercare.” as the sexuality of tits suddenly becomes the functionality of breasts. The writing is witty and sharp, there’s a funny satire on the plethora of self-help books for new mothers, and painfully funny riffs on chapped nipples and leaking breast milk. Every woman has her own story.
As a play it is still a work in progress as if the writer is still feeling for the right length and the confidence to leave her words work without the support of background images. There could also have been more about the sexuality of breasts which was mentioned in the programme but not really explored. But the play did provoke debate, it sold out its debut performance and many people accepted the writer’s invitation to linger after the show and discuss the issues raised. In the best traditions of low budget fringe theatre, Suschitzky sets up and delivers, with energetic help from Allie Dowing, Jenni Jones, Rebecca Jones and Rosie Jones as exotic dancers, waitresses and breastfeeding feminist dictators. A fast-moving, short, sharp show.
