Introducing Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best new art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today we take a look at ‘The Doll’ from Audiobooks.
Today we look at the new single and music video from musical duo Evangeline Ling and David Wrench, better known as Audiobooks. The lead single, ‘The Doll’, comes along with the announcement of their second full-length album, Astro Tough. The song features an electronic backdrop and intensifying beats along with Ling’s characteristic sing-speaking storytelling.
The accompanying music video is directed by Paul Kelly and focuses on a child walking through the typically busy places around South London and Kent after they were rendered silent during the pandemic. Speaking of the video and his vision for it, Wrench explained:
“I had the idea for ‘The Doll’ video while out for a walk […] I was watching a child walk confidently, checking their surroundings, taking it all in. I started to recall how the world used to look as a child. I was lucky to grow up in the countryside and to be able to walk alone in nature. My father was a sportsman (he won a Commonwealth medal for Wales for Weightlifting) and a PE teacher, so I used to go with him and spend time in empty sports venues. There is a special atmosphere to places built for crowds when they are empty. It struck me that a video based on a child exploring these empty spaces and finding something that had been lost would make a really fitting film for our track ‘The Doll’.”

Audiobooks’ second album, Astro Tough, will be released in October.
