This is Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today’s video is ‘Brave – Wales World Cup Remix’ from Mace the Great.
Welcome back to another video of the week! With Wales qualifying for the World Cup for the first time since 1958, this week we take a look at Mace the Great’s World Cup remix of ‘Brave’, a short rap that celebrates the occasion. ‘Brave’, originally released back in July 2022, is a track from Mace the Great who, in honour of Wales qualifying, has remixed and re-released the song with a new video, where he sports a Welsh football kit.
Mace the Great (Mason Burnett), a grime and hip-hop artist from Splott in Cardiff, is predicted to see a very successful year, having previously won a Triskel Award at the Welsh Music Prize in 2020. Following the release of his hugely popular EP, ‘My Side of the Bridge’, he was also selected to be the first Welsh MOBO Awards artist to perform and showcase at one of the biggest music events of the year, the SXSW (South by Southwest) awards that took place this year in Texas. Speaking on this, the rapper said:
“I was like, oh my God, I don’t believe it. It’s crazy […] It is like a dream for me, because I’ve never been to America, so the fact that the first time I’m going is to perform my own music – it’s like woah, this is huge for me.”
He adds “we need to show people that there’s not just one kind of person in Wales […] I need to be here in Cardiff, kicking doors down and being here with people.”
