This is Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today’s video has a distinctly festive feel. ‘Noson ‘Dolig Wrth y Bar’ is the new release from Hyll, featuring Katie Hall.
With just over a week to go until the big day, we’re getting into the Christmas spirit here at Wales Arts Review and shining a spotlight on a new release in the form of a collaboration from Welsh band Hyll and singer Katie Hall. ‘Noson ‘Dolig Wrth y Bar’ (Christmas Night at the Bar) is a fun, festive celebration described by Hyll as being “a celebration of Christmas with an invitation to everyone, boys and girls, good or bad”.
Welsh language band Hyll, who have been influential in promoting Welsh language music over the past few years, joined forces with Katie Hall, who usually sings with her own Pontypridd-based alt-rock trio Chroma, to create the Christmas track.
Adding to the Christmas feel, the song opens with a the hook from ‘Jingle Bells’, before Hyll’s signature sound kicks in. Hall lends her vocals to the track, adding another layer to a track which has that laid-back feel that we all secretly wish we could capture at this time of year. The video features an empty pub, with Hall sporting an angel costume, while leaning on the deserted bar.
Both artists are worth looking out for in 2023. Hyll have recently hinted that a new album may be on the way next year, while Hall has just rounded off an exciting year in which Chroma were hotly tipped by Under The Radar Mag as ones to watch in 2022.
‘Noson ‘Dolig Wrth y Bar’ was recorded by Mei Gwynedd and is available to stream now from JigCal Records.
