This is Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today’s video is ‘Give You Love’ a music video from Sky Barkers.
As autumn starts to set in, this week’s Video of the Week is a throwback to, arguably, one of the catchiest songs of the summer, ‘Give You Love’, from Sky Barkers. The West Wales band released their single earlier in the summer, but have now added a lively video, which has a distinctly eighties feel to it. Sky Barkers is made up of Jo MacGregor Messore, Dan Messore and Matt Brown and categorise their sound as being lyrically connective and energy driven music, “rooted in songwriting but with a wonky edge”.
Described on their YouTube channel as being “filmed, accidentally, in the RAFA club in St Davids, West Wales during a classic midsummer sideways rainstorm”, the video for ‘Give You Love’ brings together flashes of colour and an energetic choreography.
The band have described the song as a combination of celebration and rebellion, written during one of the lockdowns caused by the pandemic. “’Give You Love’ is a celebration and rebellion song. We wrote it during one of the lockdowns and it’s really just about loving – in the broadest sense – honestly and wildly, which in the current climate seems an act of necessary rebellion. Letting love be the force that courses through you and blasts you out of apathy, fear, whatever. But we’ve got to dare to be vulnerable enough to let it in, to feel it for real – and so many of us have big old bags of pain in the way. But in those moments when we really connect and let this incredible force tingle through us – it’s pretty wild. And we need it like water.”
‘Give You Love’ is streaming in all the usual places and is also available to download from Bubblewrap Collective, here.
