Introducing Video of the Week from Wales Arts Review. We’ll be showcasing some of the best new art in Wales with a new video shared every week. From music to drama and everything in between, videos will not be limited by medium. Today we take a look at “Sink Into You” from Skip Curtis.
This week, we’ve picked the music video for ‘Sink Into You’ – the new single from Skip Curtis’ debut solo album, Culture Violet – as our video of the week. With an Americana/Indie rock aesthetic, the single – like the album – marks a departure in sound for Curtis who was previously lead vocalist and frontman of band XY&O. Since going it on his own, Curtis has been busy; not only has he spent time writing and producing for other artists while releasing his own solo work, he’s also established the record label Pet Shop Records.
Matt Taylor reviewed the album for Wales Arts Review, writing of Culture Violet he says: “On a full listen, Curtis manages to transition from acoustic plucking to earworm bops with laidback ease. While the outlook of individual songs may vary, emotional resonance persists.” Taylor adds that ‘Sink Into You’ is “Culture Violet’s summer bop — a welcome escape from the humdrum of lockdown life”.
Speaking of the song, Curtis said: ‘It’s a nautical love song. On Earth, there’s nothing much more powerful than the force of water, so it felt like the ideal metaphor to use when writing a song about devotion and love. Good old, powerful, forceful love.’
